My dreams were as big as Shaquille O’Neal… Until he shattered them like a backboard.
"Well we did it, 19 years baby," Shaq said as my head sank lower into my palms. "I’m telling you first, I’m about to retire."
I wasn’t upset about Shaq retiring from professional basketball, but rather it was the way he told his fans.
Shaq announced his retirement on a new social media platform, that he endorses, called Tout. A social media platform that was my idea… or at least I thought it was.
A few months ago I came up with, what I thought was a brilliant and original idea. A site similar to Twitter, but instead of posting updates with words, the user would use only video to create a status.
Like most of my original ideas, it apparently wasn’t original. With the Internet evolving on a day-by-day basis, any web-based idea needs quick action to launch ahead of the competition. Other than asking my friends and family what they thought of my idea, my action was pretty much nil.
Shaq announced his retirement June 1 on Tout, and 500,000 views (in three hours) later, my idea was blocked. Stuffed, more like it. Swatted up into the fourth row.
Tout, which launched in mid-April, describes its website as "Life’s moments." Users upload 15-second-or-less videos to share important moments with their friends, family, followers, etc. Shaq stumbled upon the phone app and was instantly intrigued.
He contacted Tout and said he would endorse the company if he was able to get a small portion of the ownership. That small portion eventually may turn out to be big, since the 7’1” future hall-of-famer frequently Tweets Tout links to his 4.1 million Twitter followers.
The idea for Tout arose when founder and CEO Michael Downing recognized Twitter and blogs were lacking the visual experience.
"Not everybody has witty and well-crafted writing skills to express themselves in blogs or Tweets, but we all have unique visual perspective and, these perspectives will be the basis of a new form of conversation and storytelling moving forward," Downing said.
However, the idea has not fully caught on yet. Shaq has just over 5,000 followers on Tout, which is around one percent of his Twitter following. History tells us Tout will catch on (print to television, Youtube, etc.), but it just may need another larger-than-life star to enjoy retirement on it.
Even though IMAX theaters have been in the United States since the 1970’s, they have been really gaining popularity in the past decade – could this summer be the biggest summer yet for IMAX theaters?
Consider this: While expected blockbuster film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 raked in a record topping $400 million at its debut, it set another record, scoring $23.2 million of the total take just in IMAX viewings alone.
Now that’s some real magic.
More and more movies are being produced with these IMAX figures in mind. The IMAX option gives moviegoers an entirely original cinema experience.
"Harry Potter was really big at Penn Cinema and huge at Penn Cinema IMAX," Penn Ketchum, who owns Penn Cinema in Lancaster, Pa., said in an interview with Lancast July 11. "And it’s the same thing with pretty much all other movies. If it’s a huge hit then it’s super huge (in IMAX)."
The Harry Potter movie trumped fellow summer blockbuster "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" by just $100,000, which held on to the all-time IMAX record for only two weeks. These impressive numbers were accumulated from just over 500 IMAX theaters worldwide.
When "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is added to the mix, summer 2011 has had several huge blockbusters, all of which were in IMAX, making this summer not only the summer for long movie titles, but also the summer of the IMAX.
Penn Cinema actually debuted its new IMAX 3D theatre last November during the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" opening weekend. It was a massive hit.
The theater enjoyed the success of several other blockbusters shown in IMAX this summer (Pirates, Transformers, Super 8, Thor, Cars 2 and, of course, Harry Potter), and Ketchum believes IMAX truly enhances the viewing experience.
"(IMAX) really adds value to the movie and we think they’re awesome," Ketchum said.
The final potential blockbuster IMAX release this summer is "Cowboys and Aliens" which hit the (really) big screen this weekend. Ketchum includes this in his list of must-see IMAX movies of 2011, along with "Mission: Impossible– Ghost Protocol" which comes out in December.
AidemMedia recently shot a commercial for Penn Cinema’s IMAX which can be seen below. We shot this 15-second commercial in a cinematic style which is comparable to a blockbuster movie trailer.
What movies have you seen this summer in IMAX? Did it enhance your viewing experience?
Beyond just being an introductory video on the web, our work with Home of the Sparrow allowed Aidem Media to create a moving piece that carried a message.
This was one of those projects that comes along and opens your eyes.
Home of the Sparrow, an Exton, PA based transitional housing program for women, was in the process of rebranding themselves. They had local Lancaster agency Not Bad Design developing a new logo, colors and website. One of the main features on the site was going to be a video on the homepage…which is when Aidem Media was asked to become a part of the project.
By sitting down and brainstorming with Not Bad Design, writer Steve Zimmermann of Zed Creative and photographer Matthew Lester, we were able to develop the idea for a high-quality video that would not only be informative, but impactful.
Through each step of the process, Aidem Media worked closely with all of the collaborative partners in a way that allowed for, dare we use a cliché, perfect synergy. Sorry, it had to be done.
The shoot involved multiple voice-overs, several different locations and the need to not only be delicate in how we handled the subject matter, but the desire to show everything that this wonderful organization does in only a few minutes.
In the end, we were really going for a cinematic look and feel. We understood that it was a dramatization, but the closer the audience felt to the subject matter then the more of an effect it would have in carrying the message home. To be fair, we began thinking of the piece as it’s own little movie, and not just an HD video that was going to live on the web. Oh, and for the camera dorks out there, all of this was shot on a Canon DSLR. Spiffy.
We’re proud of the result and couldn’t be happier about partnering with other dedicated professionals to create what we feel is an inspirational piece.
Please, watch the video and share your thoughts with us.

My first day interning for AidemMedia Solutions allowed me to dive right into the action and accompany them on a corporate video shoot. The video was for York Wallcoverings – a wallpaper manufacturer specializing in interior decorating and design. Check out the final video below, and to read more about my first day and see behind the scene pictures click the link under the video. Enjoy!!!
My name is Matt Kisiday, I am a student at Lebanon Valley College majoring in Digital Communications, and at the beginning of this semester (spring ’11) I was fortunate enough to acquire an internship position at AidemMedia Solutions. Here is how my first day on the job went.
My first day interning for AidemMedia Solutions we shot a corporate video for York Wallcoverings, located in York, PA. York Wallcoverings is a wallpaper manufacturer specializing in interior decorating designs. This was the second time Aidem Media Solutions has worked with York Wallcoverings, and the purpose of this shoot was to film an updated version of their previous corporate video for their brand in China. This video will be displayed at trade shows around the world.
The day began by meeting at the Blue Tiger Studios, at 7am. We packed up all the gear including cameras, lights, tripods, and the jib before drove to the factory for filming. When we arrived the first things we shot were close ups of the machines printing the wall paper designs. We also filmed the workers running these machines and monitoring the progress of production. After filming the necessary shots in the factory we moved on to shoot the designers analyzing the final product in their showroom. While on the shoot I was responsible for setting up the lighting, jib, and running extension cords.
Overall, this was a very beneficial learning experience for me. I was able to jump right into a shoot on my first day, which helped me get any immediate feel for the ins and outs the professional video world. While on the shoot, I learned the how to set up and position lighting, how to work a jib, film specific shots, and the professional way to interact with a client. I couldn’t have asked for a better first day; jumping right into a shoot helped me forget any nerves I had going into the job and really tested my ability to work with my co-workers as a team.
Here are two versions of the video we made for Davenport Design and GoPetUSA. The directors cut (v3) has the editing style I like best, but has a few spelling errors in it. The final version is tamed down in editing, but has all the kinks worked out.
I got a call from a web-design and internet marketing friend of mine Eric Davenport that he was doing some re-design work for GoPet .GoPet makes exercise treadwheels and treadmills for all sizes of dogs. They have been successful in distributing their equipment to doggy daycares and animal hospitals all across America and beyond. They are also trying to get consumers and dog owners to welcome GoPet exercise units into their home for supplemental home exercise for dogs. He informed me they were interested in some videos on their website and for video playback at their tradeshow kiosk. We scheduled a photo and video shoot at our studio (Blue Tiger Studios), in Downtown Lancaster. We loaded in all of the tread
They wanted a fun, energetic video that would help viewers understand the education and entertainment value of their presentation called “The Gift.”
Internet Videos for your website such as the video we made for Skeeta really show how much fun is really had at a show. It was fun watching all the kids enter the gymnasium in single file and watch the show. I remember back when I was in Elementary School and we would have an assembly – it was always so much fun. The kids at this show were watching, learning and laughing the whole time. They brought up several "volunteers" and kept the show very interactive. If you like the video, or know someone who might be interested in seeing the program, feel free to share the video or send them this link!
Check out this video of Ian Lau whooping up on the adult "50" flat track class in Timonium MD
My brother, Ian Lau is a Pro AMA hillclimber in the "Pro Sport Class". He Travels up and down the east coast climbing 300 to 750 foot hills on a modified dirtbike. In the off season, he like to race his mini "pit bike" on a flat track class in Timonium MD. This is his first win, so I’m posting it online. If ya dig the dirtbike action, let me know, there are some local races around here you should check out !
This is one of our latest commercials we did with PostageVFX for Just Press Play.
This is one of those videos you get to shoot and say "I love my job". I think everyone involved brought out their inner child and revisited the times when we sat in front of a video game console for hours and "got our gaming on". Ron, Zac and all the crew at JPP were fun to work with, we all had a great time during the shoot. It took some time to stack the games for the stop motion animations, but the end result payed off ! Allen and Joe at PostageVFX created the 3d hands and console that gets pushed with each repeating line of the name of the store. Keep your eyes peeled for this one on Comcast Cable channels in the Lancaster region, and hey – if you have someone that needs games, or needs to trade in some games, these are the guys to see!
This is a new spot produced by PostageVFX for Crimson American Grill in York, PA. AideM Media provided the camerawork and cinematography for the spot.
I love shooting videos for restaurants. One of the main reasons for this is because normally you get to eat amazing food after you are done shooting it 🙂 A few weeks Allen Clements and Joe Krzemienski contacted us about doing camerawork for a TV commercial for a new restaurant in York. They wanted to spot to have a national look and feel, but also capture show that the restaurant was not a chain. The theme of the spot was creating a checklist of what would make the perfect place to eat. Postage worked with Crimson to create a story and shot list and we loaded up 2 vehicles full of gear, and trekked across the river to get our shoot on. Postage had a heck of a shot list for us to capture, so time was of the essence, we had scenes to shoot in the kitchen, the restaurant and the bar. We shot with the Canon 7d with a 24-70mm L series zoom lens. We used natural lighting in the kitchen, but for the wide shot in the restaurant scene we had to use about 7 lights to light up the walls and even out some dark spots. We ran into some challenges shooting the desserts, but switched the lighting around and did our best to give visual justice to the delicious foods and desserts….Postage took our footage and worked their visual magic on it as usual….from the 3d text, to the flames to the animated checks and paper tear across the bottom….. I’m beginning to get hungry now, so I think I’ll end this blurb before I start licking the screen…. I’m off to lunch – Enjoy the spot!!!
